As an Afghan-Canadian writer, I began my career as a filmmaker by writing and directing episodic dramas for Tolo TV and Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) in Afghanistan. I used the opportunity to write evolved female characters and insert story elements that would entertain and educate Afghan women about their legal rights. And, I was diligent about casting and supporting female actors to break through cultural barriers.

Committed to stories that arise from world events, I’m also as a documentary filmmaker in Canada. My feature documentary, In The Rumbling Belly of Motherland, was nominated for a 2021 DGC award. It won the best feature at the 2021 Reelworld film festival. I was also awarded the Outstanding Producer award at Reelworld for 2021. My CBC short doc, Fatima In Kabul, was also nominated for the 2021 Canadians Screen Awards and a 2022 Banff Rockie Award.
